Ok well it has been a slow project/ now projects. Since 2011 I have done absolutely nothing on the first build except gather bits and pieces need to restore it. The budget was tight so couldn't afford the parts to repair the rust straight out, and every little bit of cash I ran into went on parts that popped up on Trade Me. The funding situation got a lot worse at the end of 2012 when me and the girly bought a 1900 Villa. Early 2013 I took on a 2nd 1300 sport project when I stumbled upon a genuine 1300 sport with live plates. So far I have two sport dash clusters, two genuine sport/1300 GT complete engines and blocks, 2 sport diffs, one set of floor pans, one set of sport front guards, one set of live plates, two sets of sport rostyles, two twin throat 32/32 webbers and one set of twin 40mm side draughts, a set of disc struts for the replica, two spare sport and beyond spec lightweight flywheels, disc pads for both cars a trolley to put the car on for the floor repairs. hardest parts to find I fear are going to be the genuine seats and seat belts.
first post 2011
It took 4 hours to get on to the trailer with no wheel pull tool trying to free up the seized drums that had been sitting for 18 years. And a 3 hour trailer trip from Whangarei to it's new home in Auckland, 3 out of four are free now.
now its in the shop as expected finding more floor pan rust than was visable to my greedy eye prior to purchase, however I had priced replacement the foor pan sections.
ripped up botch job that was done on it, back in the day it last was running. Riveted sheet sections over top of the front L and R sections with sealant around the edges. Then black stciky matting covering the rear sections.

4: RANDOM MAYBE USEFULL INFO
1300e and 1300gt were both Mark 1 Escorts.
1300 Ghia was indeed a "GT spec" Mk 2 but so too was the mk2 1300 Sport.
I also believe that some late "run out" model 1300's of all types were randomly fitted with GT spec parts (probably from the parts bin?). I once owned a mint 1980 1300 Pop Plus "linnet" special edition (yeah right) which had full GT spec, including the gearbox ratios.
BTW All x/f Mk2 Escorts came with a 711m block as standard (if there is such a thing as a standard x/f by now)
as did all post september 1970 x/f mk1's.
1300 GT spec Mk1 escorts had enlarged 1.50 inch inlet valves (up from 1.41) and standard 1.24 inch exhaust valves, a tubular exhaust manifold and ran a Weber 32 DFE twin choke carb. Compression ratio was 9:1 as were all 1100/1300's
Also there where better gearbox ratios.
Mk2 1300gt spec was the same but by 1975 all 1300cc escorts ran 1:50 inlet / 1.41 ex valves. Mk2 GT spec ran a webber DGV twin choke and had a lumpier 272 degree cam (256 on normal 1300). CR upped slightly to 9.2:1
"37" stamped on the top of the head means GT spec.
"AA" in the number on the side of the block means 1100/1300 "BA" means 1600.
The actual engine number is on a little tab flush with the top of the block on the exhaust side, near the front.
HTH
oops got a bit carried away.
Dave, the 37 on the side of the head is also used in non-gt cars.
There has been an ongoing thread about this as I have a 37 head ( as opposed to 33 quoted in Haynes) for a 1.3 gl.
I do not have a GT engine
From tons of research, the MkII heads on the 1.3 and 1.3 gt had identical valve sizes.
Can you confirm your source on this point as it contradicts my understanding?

That's all well and good providing you've got the donor vehicle and know it to be the original diff. Thirdly, mark a wheel position and count the number of propshaft revolutions to make one complete turn of the rear wheel - you need to rotate BOTH wheels together and it's a pain to get completely right. So finally, the last and most accurate way of doing it is to take the diff out and divide the number of crownwheel teeth by that on the pinion."

1300 E
Based on the Mk1 Escort body shell, but with the 1300 Sport engine, the 1300E variant was launched in 1973.This model was very well equipped, external differences included rectangular headlamps and auxiliary lights, radial tyres, wider wheels with chunky chrome trims and extra side indicators. To bring the passenger and driver experience upmarket, the 1300E was fitted with deep pile carpets, extra sound insulation, a unique centre console, luxury carpets, GT pod instruments and a 3 spoke steering wheel. A wood trimmed dash and door panels finished off the interior.
Available in Metallic Purple and Metallic Amber the colours offered a bold statement. Introduced during March 1973 for £1182 the E was built using the Sport shell including the flared front wheel arches. Many models were actually built at the AVO (Advanced Vehicle Operations) plant in South Ockendon in Essex.
The front of the vehicles had the GT style rectangular headlamps plus two distinctive Lucas LK8 spot lamps. Side repeaters were fitted as standard just below the very distinctive black or white coach stripe's that ran down the length of the car. At both ends of the car Ford fitted full-length chrome bumpers complete with chrome over riders. Other items of chrome included the mirrors, window edging strips and sill covers.
The rear of the car had the usual Escort features but came with a pair of reversing lamps as standard. To help show this was no ordinary Escort Ford decided to not only put the 1300E badges on the front wings and rear of the car as with other Escort models but to also add the badges to each of the rear quarter sections to the roof. (which was often covered in a black vinyl).
Mechanically the 1300E shared the same 72bhp 1.3ltr cross-flow engine as the Sport and GT models, connected to a 4.125:1 close ratio gearbox meant that the 1300E could reach 0 - 60 in just over 13 seconds. The top speed was a claimed 93mph
